Hello everyone!

I apologize as we have not been able to send out monthly newsletters. We hope to have that corrected soon. Meantime here are a few items to bring you up to date on the happenings here in the Wreaths office so far this year.

We are in need of more volunteers to assist with our event on December 17th. With the expansion of the cemetery, another 4-500 interments this year and more visitors coming to help with the actual wreath placement we have a number of positions that need to be filled. Please reply with your phone number so we may call you with answers to any question you may have and get you on our volunteer list.

Some positions needed are: Section Leaders, Traffic Control, Information Table, and Refreshments Table. This can be a very rewarding experience to be involved in the actual planning and execution of this most successful event. If you have participated before and can again please reply to this mail so we may keep you informed of any changes. There will be a special briefing for everyone assisting that will be held on Dec 10 at 11am. It will not take more than an hour or two at the most.

Remember: Many Hands Make For Light Work

When we removed the wreaths on January 31st we experimented with using a few long “hay hooks” to make it easier to pick up the wreaths with out having to bend over. All the comments were very favorable so we were able to work with a supplier and acquire an additional 48 hooks. We are in the process of modifying them for safety and painting bright red so they can be seen in the snow.

Promotional Events: We have again been invited to attend the Saint Cloud VA Rendezvous that will be held on September 17th. If you can assist with our booth that day please reply to this mail.  It’s only from 1 to 4:30pm.

The annual meeting is planned for October 8th at the Little Falls VFW Post 1112 at 1pm. Please mark that date on your calendar. Details will follow.

Sincerely,

John Thomas, President

Hello Again Everyone!

Only a few days till the wreath removal project on Saturday January 30th at 11am.

Also the Little Falls American Legion Post 46 is going to conduct a flag disposal ceremony. If you have any unserviceable flags, bring them with you and they will be disposed of properly.

We will have the trailers to put the wreaths in stationed in the sections.  Also if snow on the ground we have our wreath removal hooks there to make it easier to pick them up. If anybody forgot to return their hook last year please bring them back to use this year.

Starbucks Coffee is going to provide us with lots of hot coffee. We are planning on having it there by 10:30am.  If anybody would like to make some donuts bring them along.

There will be a short briefing at the west side of the administration building at 11am.

We should have all the wreaths removed by 12 noon and we can then go to Nipper’s Canteen for a bite to eat (she will have a luncheon special) and some conversation.

Bring the whole family and some friends.

Sincerely,

John Thomas

December 16, 2015 – 3:56pm

Hello everyone;

As you might have heard the WreathsForTheFallen ceremony and honor wreath placement on Saturday, December 12th was very successful.  Estimates are there were over 1000 cars with many supporters that attended the ceremony and assisted with the wreath placement.

The ceremony started at exactly 11am as scheduled and was concluded at 11:19 am. Then everyone went to the various sections to help with the placement of 4,157 wreaths. At 11:53 am all the wreaths were on the veterans graves. A record time of only 34 minutes to place them all! It’s an amazing sight to see every grave marker with a fresh Balsam wreath and a big red bow.

We have posted two videos on the www.WreathsForTheFallen.org web site. Go to the Photo & Video Gallery and scroll down to the “Event Video Gallery”. The first two videos are marked “New”. One from the Brainerd Dispatch and one from Lakeland News TV.

Then you might scroll down to the Patriotic Video Gallery where there is the “United States Air force Band Holiday Concert at the Smithsonian”. I trust you will enjoy it.

We have also received many photographs of the event. After they are all processed and on our web site we shall let you know.

And finally here is a link to a Minnesota National Guard story about the event called: “A Wreath for every Headstone

Our thanks go out to the almost 100 volunteers that worked the event along with the over 1000 supporters that came.

More to follow!

Sincerely,

John Thomas

September 4, 2015

Just a quick note to let everyone know our day at the 2015 Minnesota State Fair Military Appreciation Day on September 1st went very well. There were 57 military related displays in the “Expo Place” and there were people coming through to visit the exhibits all day.

Jerry Ratcliff and his grandsons were in the 6am convoy to transport our display items to the booth location on the fairgrounds. A number of our crew arrived before 7am to assist in unloading the truck. By 8am when the other military exhibits opened we had our booth ready to go, thanks to all our volunteers. The other volunteers arrived throughout the day as scheduled so our booth always had someone there. Everyone that expressed interest in assisting us in our display booth operation came and worked hard all day, despite the temperatures being in the 90s. Checking the cooler when we returned, it showed we went through 32 bottles of water. So everyone kept hydrated. Our thanks go out to everyone that assisted!

Rose and John Clement brought their beautiful “Flag Bike” as we had an extra booth to display it. Rose and John stayed at the booth all day to answer any questions anyone had. The bike display really helped make out exhibit area stand out and attracted more people.

We were able to pass out 2,294 brochures. Many people stopped and had many questions regarding WreathsForTheFallen.org and the veteran’s cemeteries.

4 in the afternoon when the exhibit area was scheduled to close was a welcome time for everyone that worked. With everyone’s help we were able to get everything packed up in short order for the trip home.

We are processing some pictures and will have them in our next newsletter for you to see.

Our thanks and gratitude goes out to everyone that helped make the event so successful.

Only two more major events to go this year;

Saturday, September 19th – 1:00 to 4:30 – Saint Cloud VA Rendezvous
Sunday, September 20th – 10am to 2pm - Camp Ripley Open House

These events are much shorter time wise.

If you can assist us with our display booth at either one please reply to this e-mail or call us.

Sincerely,

Hello everyone;

As we fast approach the deadline to mail the tickets and credentials for the Minnesota State Fair we find we are short of the desired number of volunteers needed to assist at our display booth on Tuesday, September 1st.

As we have mentioned in previous mail, we will provide FREE tickets to the fair. This includes any family members that would like to come with you. Also all volunteers will receive a new WreathsForTheFallen.org T-shirt. Just let us know the size needed.

We urgently need a few more people to assist. The booth hours are 8am to 4pm. There is no requirement to work the total time. What ever you are comfortable with is OK with us.

Your can work the booth for a few hours and then you and the family can attend the fair the rest of the day.

This is the biggest event we attend where we can get the word out about WreathsForTheFallen.org to the most people. Last year we were able to distribute 2849 brochures that brought in many contributions to make it possible to honor all the fallen veterans at the State Cemetery in Little Falls. Your assistance is most appreciated.

I have attached a fair schedule we received from the National Guard Public Affairs office.

PLEASE CALL US AT 218-829-6622 OR REPLY TO THIS E-MAIL.

WreathsForTheFallen.org  - July News Update

A big hello to everyone and Happy belated Fathers Day to all the daddy’s out there and I trust everyone had a GREAT 4th weekend.

The date for our Annual Meeting has been set for Saturday, July 18th at the Little Falls VFW Post 1112.

Social Eat, Meet & Greet about 12 noon.

Meeting time 1:30pm.

Being in the daytime we shouldn’t have to be concerned with any deer on the road but be careful anyway.

Our colorful brochure has been updated thanks to Patrick Iten of Iten Creative.  Pat at First Impression Printing lowered the cost for printing our brochures. That reduced price allowed us to get 20,000 brochures which will allow us to distribute them in the new South East Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in the Preston area. Also Kevin at Lakes Printing has come forward with some colorful improvements (at no extra charge) for our remittance envelopes that will be used in our mailings that we will do in August.

We have again been asked to have a booth and display at the Benton County Fair on August 9th, The Minnesota State Fair on September 1st, and the Saint Cloud VA Rendezvous on September 19th and the Camp Ripley Open House on September 20th. We will also have a presence at the Crow Wing County Fair on August 4th and the Morrison County Fair on August 13th.  The Minnesota State Fair will be again providing FREE tickets for those volunteers that will be assisting us that day. So if you feel you can assist with any of those events please let us know and mark the date down on your calendar.

Our Events web page is fast filling up with event posters. We have almost 100 events and rides posted and more coming in each week. If you are looking for a place to go and something to do check out the Events page. Click Here to view the events web page.

Jerry Ratcliff went to the Red Bull Military Appreciation Day at North Branch on June 7th with our new pop up canopy and a bunch of the new brochures.  He reported much success and was able to provide everyone attending one of our new color brochures.

We just sent two packs of brochures to Bob Schule for distribution at the July 11th Christmas in July Motorcycle Ride in North Branch and the Annual 2015 Bikers Against Soldier Suicide Motorcycle Run (big file) on the 11th. Our thanks to all the great people that help promote WreathsForTheFallen.org.

Rose confirmed she can bring the fabulous “Flag” bike to the Benton County Fair, the Saint Cloud Rendezvous and the Camp Ripley Open House. We are making arrangements for extra display space next to the WreathsForTheFallen.org booth for the bike. It has always drawn many people to our display area. If you would like to assist in any of the events please let us know.

Laura Becker indicated she will set up our portable display stand at Wal-Mart in Saint Cloud for the July 4th weekend. We sent her several hundred brochures to hand out. We should have a report on how that turned out soon.

So I ask, might there be something you can do to help promote WreathsForTheFallen.org??? Just send an E-Mail or call with your ideas.

Once again mark down on your calendar Saturday, July 18 for our 2015 Annual Meeting at the Little Falls VFW.

Social Eat, Meet & Greet about 12 noon.  Meeting starts at 1:30 pm.

See you there!

Sincerely,

John Thomas, President

SUCCESS AGAIN!

Despite the rain delay and moving the flag removal to Wednesday, we were able to remove all the almost 4000 flags in record time of only 37 minutes at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.  We started at 11:15 after the briefing and were finished at 11:52. Truly an amazing effort from all that could attend and assist!

With the assistance of the number of solders from Camp Ripley along with a number of WreathsForTheFallen.org supporters the task was completed in record time.

We thank you all.

Sincerely,

John Thomas

May 25th, 2015

WreathsForTheFallen has again been asked to assist with the flag removal this year

The date and time has been changed due to the pending weather forecast.

We have re-scheduled the flag removal for Wednesday May 27th; (two days after Memorial Day) again weather permitting.

The removal and packing of the small American flags is a very important responsibility as the flags need to be kept dry and in good condition to be able to be used in future years. The same routine as in past years will apply this year. We plan on starting about 11am when the dew has evaporated from the flags. If it has been raining and the flags are not dry at that time we will go for the next dry morning.

Remember “Many Hands Make For Light Work”. So mark Wednesday the 27th at 11am on your calendar and we shall see you at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls. Your efforts will be much appreciated. Bring a friend and whistle while you work.

We will all meet at the Canteen afterwards for a bite to eat and some conversation.

PLEASE NOTE: THE LONG RANGE WEATHER FORCAST SHOWS POSSIBLE RAIN FOR TUESDAY THE 26TH. THIS IS WHY WE HAVE RESCHEDULED THE REMOVAL THIS YEAR TO WEDNESDAY THE 27TH AT 11AM.

January 31, 2015

So the question everyone is asking; “How did the wreath removal at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery go”? To say it was a success would be an understatement.

As the 11th hour approached, the many volunteers arrived to assist with the wreath removal. Many kept warm by consuming 5 gallons of hot Starbucks coffee.

Everyone gathered at the west entrance of the interment building for the morning briefing.

At 11:00 the American Legion Post 621 from Saint Augusta, MN posted the colors and we started off with the Pledge of Allegiance.

John Thomas then briefed everyone on the removal procedures that needed to be followed.

WreathsForTheFallen.org’s new Chaplain, Reverend Shirley Nelson gave a short prayer.

At 11:10 everyone went to the various cemetery sections to start the removal of the 3,800 honor wreaths that were placed at the December 13th ceremony.

At 11:30 the wreath removal was completed. An amazing feat to remove that many wreaths in only 20 minutes! To see everyone working together as a team was a sight to see.

Our thanks and gratitude to out to all our valued WreathsForTheFallen.org supporters and the cemetery staff that came in on their day off to help coordinate the removal activities.

We will soon have many pictures posted at www.WreathsForTheFallen.org

Saturday, January 31st at 11am is the wreath removal of 3,800 wreaths at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery. Your help will be most appreciated.

We will have the trailers to put the wreaths in, stationed in the sections.  Also if there is snow on the ground or the wreaths are frozen down, we have 25 wreath removal hooks to make it easier to pick them up.

First, there will be a short briefing at the west side of the administration building at 11am.

Hot coffee will be available courtesy of Starbucks.

We should have all the wreaths removed by 12 noon and we can then go to Nipper’s Canteen for a bite to eat and some conversation.

Bring the whole family and some friends.

January10, 2015

We wish all our valued supporters a Happy New Year!

As you know (post event update sent on 12/23/14) we enjoyed a very successful 2014 due mainly to the support we received from you and your friends.

Now it is time to move along and plan the New Year.

****************************

First I would like to introduce our new Chaplain, Reverend Shirley Nelson.

Pastor Nelson being an ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church, pastoring since 1996 has recently retired from her pastoring duties in churches in New Jersey, Ohio and Minnesota. Having now purchased a home in Brainerd she is enjoying her retirement and spends much time volunteering at a number of area organizations.

Her background includes being a Counselor in Addictions, Health, Grief, Dissociative Disorders, Hospital Chaplain, and other life issues.

She enjoys Organic Gardening, Music and Art.

Should you desire to contact Pastor Shirley, her WreathsForTheFallen.org E-Mail address is: Chaplain@WreathsForTheFallen.org or call the Wreaths office at 218-270-3070.

****************************
Saturday, January 31st at 11am is the date and time we have been asked to schedule the wreath removal at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery next to Camp Ripley. There will be a number of large trailers positioned in each section so we do not have far to walk.  It would be good if we could have the use of several pickup trucks (with 4 wheel drive) for some of the areas.

GOOD NEWS! We have acquired 25 long “hay hooks” to ease the job of pulling the wreaths up if they are frozen in place. We tested a couple last year with positive results so we now have a quantity of them to ease our efforts.

Following the wreath removal a post event will be at the “Nippers Canteen” and you can get a beverage and a bite to eat along with being able to meet the other supporters.

So mark the date; Saturday, January 31st on your calendar and we shall see you there.  It is a fun time for all and with your assistance will not take very long to accomplish. Last year everything was completed in less than one hour.

****************************
Plans for our annual meeting are in the works. Should you have any topics that need to be included in the Annual Meeting agenda please send them to Office@WreathsForTheFallen.org.

****************************

We finally got the time lapse videos we took of the cemetery expansion of section 9 stitched together and converted so you can see them on your computer.  It spans the dates from May 24th to June 1st. You can view the video on our web site’s “Photo & Video Gallery”. Scroll down to the “Event Video Gallery”. The camera is next to the columbarium looking north with section 10 in the foreground. The video shows the excavation of the new section 9, a new internment in section 10, placement of flags on each marker for Memorial Weekend, cars arriving for the Memorial service, flag removal (don’t blink), and about ½ of the burial crypts installed.

Be sure to check our web site for the latest Organizational Information and Special Announcements at www.WreathsForTheFallen.org.

And finally, we stopped by the cemetery on January 3rd to see the results of the WreathsForTheFallen.org ceremony and Honor Wreath Placement on December 13th. These pictures are also in our "Photo & Video Gallery” now.

See you on the 31st

December 23, 2014

To all our supporters we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The results of our December 13th National Remembrance Ceremony at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery are in.

All the 3,800 wreaths we needed arrived on time at 7:30 am despite a very foggy morning. Also arriving in the early morning hours were the volunteers that would be assisting with the many duties needed to prepare for our annual mission and event. Shortly after 8 am the proper quantity of wreaths were staged at each section of the cemetery. At the same time setup of the information table and refreshments was underway. By 8:30 the parking crews arrived and shortly after the cars started to arrive. They were able to park the almost 500 cars with families that came to attend the ceremony and placing the honor wreaths on our nation’s fallen veterans. Our thanks go out to all the volunteers that assisted with the parking duties. An excellent example of team work in action!

We have received many pictures along with a video that Lakeland Public TV did for the news regarding the event.  You can see them all on our web site www.WreathsForTheFallen.org. Just go to the Photo & Video Gallery and look under “Photo Gallery” and the “Event Video Gallery”.

To say the event was a success is an understatement.

From the several honor guards from the American Legion Post 46, VFW Post 9073, Saint Cloud and Brainerd Civil Air Patrol, along with our nations “National Anthem” so eloquently performed by retired Sgt 1st Class Robin Major who came all the way from New Richmond, WI, then a very informative narration by our vice president Norville Pervier, followed by representatives of our 7 armed forces placing honor wreaths for each branch of service.  The ceremony cumulated with a 3-Volley salute and Taps performed by the Cemetery Memorial Rifle Squad, American Legion Post 217 from Paynesville.

At 11:20 the ceremony concluded and everyone departed to the section of choice to begin the placement of the 3,800 wreaths honoring our nation’s fallen veterans and in many cases their family members as well. At 12 noon, in only 40 minutes you could look out to the many sections and see a wreath on every grave.  An amazing accomplishment from everyone that attended our annual event!

All in all we had several hundred people assisting with the planning and execution of the ceremony and wreath placement that December 13th foggy morning at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls

On behalf of our board of officers and dedicated volunteers I thank each and everyone for their dedication and service.

Sincerely,

John Thomas

PRESS RELEASE – COMMUNITY EVENTS

2014 will be the busiest year ever for WreathsForTheFallen.org

With over 400 additional interments at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in the last year the challenge for WreathsForTheFallen.org to honor all our country’s fallen veterans is greater than ever.

For a number of years WreathsForTheFallen.org has endeavored to honor all our country’s fallen veterans at the cemetery by placing a wreath on each veteran’s grave in December.

We are in hopes this year we will again be able to honor all our country’s fallen veterans at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls Minnesota said John Thomas, president of WreathsForTheFallen.org. Now would be an excellent time to send that contribution or sponsorship to honor a veteran said Thomas.

WreathsForTheFallen.org was able to provide wreaths for every veteran’s grave last December 14th.

For those that would like to make a general donation to this worthy cause, please feel free to contribute to the wreath general fund for the 2014 event. Information is on the www.WreathsForTheFallen.org web site. Everyone is invited to join and assist us with this most worthy program said Thomas.

This year the date for the National Remembrance Ceremony has been scheduled for December 13th, at 11 am, the second Saturday in December at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.

For a number of years now the annual ceremony has been conducted at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery honoring those veterans that have served honorably for our country. After the ceremony consisting of representatives from each branch of the military, several thousand wreaths will be placed on the many markers of our fallen veterans. Many volunteers from Camp Ripley, the Minnesota Patriot Guard, Minnesota Civil Air Patrol, VFW’s, American Legions, and many other civic organizations along with hundreds of families coming from a wide area will perform the honor of placing the wreaths on the grave sites. Everyone is invited to come and assist in the wreath distribution.

It is suggested everyone arrive before 10 am. Plans are to have hot coffee, hot cider and other refreshments for all attending this most honored event. The ceremony starts at 11 am sharp. Wreath placement begins at about 11:20 am.

To have your personal wreath hand made and included in this memorable event; send your Name, Address, and Phone number (in case of questions) and $15.00 (or more for each wreath requested) to: 5244 Ashdale Ln – Baxter – MN – 56425. Also include the full name and Date of Birth, of the veteran or family member the wreath is for. WreathsForTheFallen.org will confirm the exact location of the grave site number. Please make your check out to “Wreaths”. All contributions are tax deductible.

PRESS RELEASE – WreathsForTheFallen.org is receiving many more requests this year.

The latest census report from the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery indicates WreathsForTheFallen.org will have to deliver and place several hundred more wreaths this year than last December.

“We have had overwhelming response to be able to accept specific grave requests.  Last year we had almost one thousand (1000) requests to place a wreath on a specific grave of a family’s loved one.  Should anyone desire to have a wreath placed on a specific grave all they need to do is provide the name and birth date for each wreath requested and we shall take care of the rest.  A hand made Balsam Fir wreath with a bright red bow will be placed on the graves in their honor” said Thomas.

To have your personal wreath hand made and included in this memorable event; send your Name, Address, and Phone number (in case of questions) and $15.00 (or more for each wreath requested) to: Wreaths, 5244 Ashdale Ln – Baxter – MN – 56425. September 25, 2014

My goodness! Good news again!

The Vietnam Veterans of America, Central Minnesota Chapter 290 is again going to have a Pig Roast, Saturday, October 4th.

Some background for our new supporters; A farmer (that wishes to remain anonymous) that raises pigs donated a couple of pigs 2 years ago for us to use at a pig roast to raise money. He has continued this contribution every year since. This has been an effort between us and the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 290 at the VFW Post 6992 in Sauk Rapids and has produced substantial funds over the last two years.

It has always been a fun evening and a wonderful meal. As described on our Events page for October 4th, there will also be a silent Auction followed by an extremely Live and Fun Auction, 4:30pm to 7pm.

It has proved to be a FUN evening every year.

Also, if you might want to assist; Servers and kitchen help are always appreciated. Please contact Bob Larson at 320-266-3061 and let him know you would like to help.

Thursday July 03, 2014

We again welcome the new supporters that have signed up for our E-Mail newsletters. Welcome aboard WreathsForTheFallen.org.

First, have a fun and safe 4th of July, fly a flag on the holiday and get outdoors during the month as many times as possible.  Take a walk, ride a bike, go for a boat ride, go swimming, fishing or any of a hundred other things during our short warm weather season.  MOST IMPORTANT - JUST HAVE FUN!!!

Our Annual Meeting is fast approaching! This year we hope the meeting will be held at a time and place more convenient to many. We are honored to have Major John Donovan from Camp Ripley as our guest speaker. Here’s your chance to learn more about Camp Ripley and have any question you might have answered.

The weather forecast for the 12th looks very good. Should you be traveling by motorcycle, please remember The Department of Defense mandates that all riders on Military Installations have proper personal protective equipment including helmets, long sleeves, pants and leather boots going above the ankle.

This is a most important time to attend as we will be determining what projects need to be addressed and what events we need to attend to spread the word about WreathsForTheFallen.org.

8,000 of our beautiful 4 color brochure have been ordered and we will need to spend a little time assembling some of them with the contribution & sponsorship inserts for distribution at the county fairs and the Minnesota State Fair. Remember: “Many Hands Make For Light Work”.

Again we welcome all the new supporters that have signed up for our E-Mail newsletters.

Reports are that the Memorial Service at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls was a resounding success. Everyone was treated to beautiful patriotic music performed by the Richfield Symphonic Band, a large parade of flags and memorable words by the Minnesota VFW State Commander, Frank Presfield

Our new Parking committee along with assistance from the American Legion Riders Brainerd Post 255, Boy Scout Troop 33 and many Patriot Guard Members parked 1,176 cars before the ceremony started at 11am. We have received several inquiries from other organizations that indicated they would like to assist with the parking also. As the attendance grows each year we need additional people to assist with all the duties necessary to make the May and December events a success. Our thanks go out to everyone that steps forward to assist us in our mission to honor our country’s fallen veterans.

Removing the over 3000 flags after the Memorial weekend is a very important project. We received a big Thank You from David Swantek for our assistance removing those flags after Memorial Day. We also want to thank the troops and the crew from the Gold Cross Ambulance that came over from Camp Ripley to assist us with the removal. After a short briefing at 11am the flag removal started at 11:10 and completed at 11:45. All removed and prepared for storage in only 35 minutes. An amazing demonstration of comradery and teamwork!

Our Future Responsibilities have increased in conducting the December Wreath Ceremony at the veteran’s cemetery. We have been asked to provide the overall event planning and coordination to include; Parking Coordination, Traffic Control, Color Guard Coordination, Master of Ceremonies, National Anthem, Guest Speaker, and Wreath Presenters. In addition to the section leaders, information table, and refreshments we could use the added assistance of some dedicated supporters to assist in the planning of this ever growing event in honoring our country’s fallen veterans.
